THE NEIGHBOURHOOD - EL VISO COLONY
History: El Viso colony was born as a low-cost housing cooperative under the 1925 Law of Cheap Houses for workers and civil servants. Nevertheless, it was never inhabited by the population for whom it was theoretically intended and, due to its location, design and qualities, it ended up being a luxury residential complex occupied by upper-middle class professionals and intellectuals.
Its architectural uniqueness and its location, in one of the highest areas of Madrid, led to its protection as an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) as a historic colony in 1977. Today, it is one of the most sought-after and prestigious residential neighbourhoods in the Spanish capital.

Nowadays: Living in El Viso means being close to a diplomatic environment: the embassies of France, Guinea, Morocco, Lithuania and Mexico are located in the area. In addition, El Viso has the most prestigious schools and higher education centres in Madrid. Besides, Calle de Serrano and Paseo de la Castellana cross the neighbourhood, boasting the most distinguished shops in the city.

According to real estate experts, El Viso represents an exclusive residential oasis where only a select few can afford to live in.

Important intellectuals and politicians such as Ortega y GassetRafael Sánchez Mazas or Salvador de Madariaga lived in this emblematic colony of Madrid’s rationalist period. More recently, famous people such as the ex-minister Miguel Boyer and Isabel Preysler, the ex-model Mar Flores, Ana Aznar or the footballer Xabi Alonso have settled there. Infanta Elena and Jaime de Marichalar have also frequented the colony, where their children’s school was located.
