The hostel Pere Tarrés of Barcelona is taking part in the World Harmony Run, a race that spreads peace and friendship around the world
The World Harmony Run, the relay race that travels the world spreading peace and harmony, has arrived in Barcelona, where it will start its trip around Europe. The Pere Tarrés Foundation supports this solidarity initiative through several functions, which include providing accommodation for the international runners in the hostel Pere Tarrés, and with some of its staff taking actual part in the race carrying the torch.
The World Harmony Run is a global relay race founded by the world peace leader Sri Chinmoy, who seeks to spread and strengthen international friendship and understanding. As a symbol of harmony, runners carry a lit torch, which they pass from hand to hand. In the course of its 30 years, the torch has been handled by many distinguished runners, committed to the aim of promoting peace in the world; they include Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa of Calcutta and Mohamed Alí. Since it was first lit, the torch has visited more than 140 nations. Hostel Pere Tarrés' staff wanted to display their support to the message this race seeks to spread, by carrying the torch. As well as this gesture, the staff from the Hostel, and several members of the race organisation have planted a tree within the compound of the social headquarters of the Pere Tarrés Foundation to celebrate the International Year of Forests, proclaimed by UNESCO. The World Harmony Run also visits educational centres from all over the world. Whilst in Barcelona, the race will visit two centres that belong to the Pere Tarrés Foundation, where over a hundred children will have the chance to meet the international runners, carry the torch and express their wishes for a more peaceful world.
